The Kiger is officially labeled by Renault as a compact model.
The production model debuted, retaining the name of its forerunner. The smart looking crossover is only 157.1 inches long, thus fighting in India hugely competitive market of sub four meter vehicles.
The Renault Kiger is based on the CMF-A platform, on which the Nissan Magnite cross, Renault Triber compact van, Renault Kwid and Datsun redi-GO hatches are also built. During the presentation of the Renault prototype, it was announced that the product cross would largely repeat it. Well, the company did not deceive, although the conveyor option is, of course it is simplified.
The exterior design is a mélange of several other models as the front end looks like a more upscale Kwid while the rear takes after the Captur with its C-shaped taillights. Renault has fitted the Kiger with LED lights at the front and rear, while the fancier version ride on 16-inch wheels with a black diamond cut finish. Even though it is a budget crossover, customers will be able to order the Kiger with two tone paint finishes.
The interior, it too looks familiar as those three round dials with built in screens for the climate controls are borrowed from other Renault and Dacia products. The start stop button also reminds us of other models from Group Renault and so does the 7-inch digital instrument cluster. It is accompanied by an 8-inch touchscreen looking like a tablet affixed to the center console.
The basic Kiger has a digital speedometer in the form of a small screen, while the expensive versions have a 7-inch display. The top cross is also promised wireless charging for a smartphone, climate control, a rear view camera, four airbags, a keyless entry system and an engine start button and a premium audio system.
In terms of technical specifications, the Kiger rides on the same platform utilized by another sub four meter model sold by Renault in India, the Triber minivan. Underneath the hood, a 3-cylinder 1.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, produces 100 horsepower and 160 Newton meters of torque. Power is sent to the front wheels via a 5-speed manual transmission or an optional CVT. That might not sound like a lot of power, but well mention the Kiger only weighs 1,012 kilograms. Interestingly, the Kiger even has a sport mode for a crisper engine response and faster shifting.
Kiger will enter the Indian market this year, it will compete with Nissan Magnite, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Tata Nexon and Mahindra XUV300. Price have not yet been determined.
