2022 Toyota Crown Kugler SUV

The 2022 Toyota Crown Kugler SUV would be the twin of the new generation Toyota Highlander crossover.

The Toyota is preparing the Crown crossover for the premiere became known last year. Initially, it was assumed that the format will replace the current large sedan, but the guesses did not come true, the SUV with the name Crown would be the twin of the new generation Toyota Highlander crossover.

The fully revealing images have been published in China by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. Each and every new car sold in the People's Republic has to go through MIIT homologation process and images are published on the website whenever that happens. Known locally as the Crown Kluger, the new SUV does indeed look like the Highlander.

Visually, the car differs from the usual Highlander due to a mesh grille, a large air intake integrated into the front bumper and dual exhaust pipes. The difference is also in the emblem, placed on the grill, this is a recognizable image of the crown, which is in other Toyota Crown instead of the nameplate with the brand logo.

A few technical specifications. For example, we know the large SUV is 197.4-inches long, 76-inches wide and 68.9-inches tall. That makes it a tad longer and taller than the US-spec Highlander while having the exact same width. Measuring 112.2-inches, the wheelbase is identical to its US counterpart.

In terms of technique, both Chinese SUV models do not differ from each other. So far, it is known that the Crown Kluger and Highlander will be offered for the Celestial market with hybrid power plants, which are based on a 2.5-liter aspirated gasoline engine with 189 horsepower working in tandem with an electric motor. The SUV ride on 18-inch alloy wheels. The range is likely to be supplemented by options with traditional internal combustion engines.

For comparison, the Toyota Highlander XSE is offered in the US with a 3.5-liter with 295 horsepower V6 engine or with a 243 horsepower hybrid power plant based on a 2.5-liter engine. In both cases, an eight-speed automatic transmission.

An official reveal of the Toyota Crown Kluger is likely imminent, and if an Auto Shanghai debut is planned.
