The 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz created a completely new segment Sport Adventure Vehicle.
The conceptual pickup Hyundai Santa Cruz was presented back in 2015, the appearance of a model with such a body in the range of the brand was announced four years later and now, finally, the production version debuted. It is worth noting that the company does not refer to the model as a truck and instead prefers the more nebulous Sport Adventure Vehicle.
Hyundai Santa Cruz is currently only addressed to North America and will be produced in the States at the same plant that produces Santa Fe, Sonata and Elantra. Earlier in the local division of Hyundai said that the model is intended for those who want to get all the attributes of a compact crossover but in need of everyday versatility. Presenting the production car the company also noted the towns people who prefer to get out into nature for the weekend. In the end, it is stated that Santa Cruz created a completely new segment Sport Adventure Vehicle. In other words, the truck should not be considered as a workhorse.
The Santa Cruz has a front end that is similar to the 2022 Tucson by adopting daytime running lights that incorporate cleanly into the grille design. You can really only notice them when illuminated. There are additional stacked lights in the lower corners. It has a steeply raked A-pillar that makes the front look sleek. The C-pillar is also angled for a more dynamic appearance than making it vertical. There are neat touches, like tiny silhouettes of the model at the top of the fender cladding.
In power configurations, Santa Cruz comes standard with a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder it produces 193 horsepower and 245 Newton-meters of torque. The engine connects to an eight-speed automatic transmission with all-wheel-drive and this setup can tow up to 1,588 kilograms.
The optional engine is a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder it produces 275 horsepower and 420 Newton-meters of torque. It uses an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic, that includes steering wheel mounted paddle shifters for manually changing gears. All-wheel-drive is standard and the turbo model can 2,268 kilograms.
The Interior, Santa Cruz almost completely repeated the Tucson SUV comes standard with an eight-inch infotainment screen that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The pickup got the traditional gear lever instead of buttons, plus a box appeared under the rear seats. The list of equipment includes a 10-inch multimedia system display, the touchscreen of which is combined with a sensor climate control, adaptive cruise control, autobraking systems, keeping in the lane, blind spot monitoring, and preventing collisions, all round cameras and the rear seats fold up to reveal storage cubbies underneath them.
At the back, where the Santa Cruz bed offers several useful features. Its floor measures 52.1-inches long. A portion of the bed also lifts up to reveal a hidden storage area. Steps at the corner of the bumper make for an easier step into the rear. Hyundai is also promising to offer bed extension accessories. Another option is an extendable tonneau cover at the base of the cab that owners can extend and lock into place when wanting to secure cargo from the outside.
The start of production is scheduled for June, while the Hyundai Santa Cruz will go on sale in the summer. Pricing has not yet been announced.
