The 2022 Mini Cooper is an icon in the automotive world, with its cheeky styling, notoriously sharp handling and cornucopia of personalization possibilities. Offered in hardtop three and five door body styles as well as a ragtop convertible, the Cooper is the brands bread and butter. Buyers can choose between a 134 horsepower three-cylinder or a 189 horsepower four-cylinder engine the latter of which is the better match to the Minis fun to drive chassis. While base models offer an affordable price tag, the better equipped S models encroach on entry luxury car territory, putting them in contention with small sedans and hatchbacks from Mercedes-Benz and BMW a tough crowd. Still, the Cooper is a good choice for drivers who value style as much as they appreciate driving enjoyment.

Mini has given the Cooper a facelift for the 2022 model year, which consists of updated front and rear bumpers, a revised grille, new wheel designs, and the introduction of some bold new colors, including a cool color shifting Multitone roof option. The interior sees several upgrades as well, including a redesigned steering wheel, a new checker patterned upholstery option, and tweaked air vents. Mini has also revised some interior trim, and made changes to the infotainment system, making the larger 8.8 inch display standard across the lineup. Also newly standard is a digital gauge display, lane departure warning, and SiriusXM satellite radio.

The most apparent change to the exterior of the Cooper is on the front end. Designers replaced the traditional gloss black grille insert with a body colored trim piece, which gives the small hatchback a cleaner look. The new Mini features a set of standard LED headlights, a few unique 17 and 18 inch wheel options, and the rear end gets a similar simplified treatment with more body colored inserts. The Union Jack taillight treatment does carry over it will be a fixture on every Mini model beginning next year, and there are three bright new hues available for 2022, Island Blue, Grey Metallic, and Zesty Yellow.

The interior every 2022 Mini Cooper is a refreshed dash design that simplifies the layout via repositioned air vents and updated surfaces, plus a piano black plastic finish wraps around the now standard 8.8 inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay compatibility. There are also a few new ambient lighting options, as well as a fresh Light Chequered cloth seating option and for the first time, a heated leather steering wheel.

The base Cooper Hardtop sports the same turbocharged 1.5 liter three-cylinder as last year good for 134 horsepower and 220 newton meter of torque, paired to either a standard six-speed manual gearbox or an optional seven speed dual-clutch. The Cooper S remains slightly more powerful, producing 189 horsepower and 281 newton meter of torque from the same turbocharged 2.0 liter four-cylinder engine from last year. And the John Cooper Works stays the most powerful option of the bunch, offering 228 horsepower and 320 newton-meter of torque. The electric Cooper SE also carries over with no powertrain updates, still offering 184 horsepower and 366 newton meter of torque, with an EPA estimated 177 kilometers of range.
